The organs that are extremely important for women’s reproductive functions are located in the pelvic region. The pelvic pain that occurs in this region sometimes appears suddenly, while at other times it may be chronic pain that has been making its presence felt for a long time. Pelvic pain, which is mostly felt in the abdominal region, may be pain of the cramping or muscle contraction type. If pelvic pain has been continuing for longer than 6 months and is affecting the person’s quality of life, it is regarded as chronic pain and medical help needs to be obtained.
Pelvic pain is encountered quite frequently in women during the menstrual period. In addition to this, pelvic pain, which can also be seen due to catching a chill or to different causes, may in some cases also be accompanied by conditions such as sweating, vomiting and nausea. Problems related to the organs located in the pelvic region can cause pelvic pain. For this reason pelvic pain can be categorised as pelvic pain due to gynaecological causes, due to pregnancy, or due to bowel or bladder problems. Along with this, if the pelvic pain is very severe and has been continuing for several weeks, it is recommended that a specialist doctor be consulted and that a process of detailed examination and radiological investigation be started.
Pelvic pain is felt mainly in the region where the pelvic bone is located. The pain that occurs in relation to pathologies belonging to the ovaries, the bowel, the bladder, the uterus and the tubes located in this region generally appears as groin pain. Because pelvic pain can arise from many different causes, it can be difficult to diagnose. In addition, its treatment also varies according to the disease causing the pelvic pain.
In order for a definite diagnosis to be made regarding pelvic pain, it is first assessed whether or not there is an infection. Following urine and blood tests, radiological investigations and minor surgical interventions may be resorted to if deemed necessary.
Endometriosis (chocolate cyst), adenomyosis, interstitial cystitis (painful bladder syndrome), fibromyalgia, ectopic pregnancy, thickening of the uterus and ovarian cancer can cause chronic pelvic pain. The treatment of pelvic pain is determined depending on the cause that can be identified. If the factor causing the pain cannot be detected, treatment aimed at relieving the pain is applied. In cases where the pain cannot be treated completely, the priority is the application of treatment methods aimed at improving the person’s quality of life. Among these treatments, treatments such as antibiotics, antidepressants, the birth control pill, hormone therapy, painkillers, physical therapy and nutritional therapy can be applied. In the event that a response to these treatments cannot be obtained, resorting to surgical procedures may be in question.
