What Is Chocolate Cyst (Endometriosis)?
Chocolate cyst, whose Latin name is endometriosis, is a disease that occurs with the settling of the layer lining the inside of the uterus, that is to say the endometrium, on organs outside the uterus.

Although the term chocolate sounds very appealing, in reality it affects the lives of the women who have the disease very seriously. Chocolate cyst appears most frequently (65 – 70%) in the ovaries.

Apart from the ovaries, it has been seen in the tissue called the peritoneal membrane that lines the bowel and the inside of the abdomen, in the bowel, in the bladder, in the ureter, in the tubes, in the vagina, in the navel, in the suture areas of patients who have had an operation (particularly after a Caesarean section and rarely the episiotomy line) and even, rarely, in the breast, the nail, the lung, the diaphragm and inside the nose.
Chocolate Cyst Disease was described more than 300 years ago. But the names we know, Endometriosis” and ”Chocolate Cyst”, were first mentioned by John Albertson Sampson from the United States of America in his article in 1921, and he thus enabled them to enter the medical literature. In this case series of 21 patients in 1921, Sampson published not only the name of the disease but also its characteristics at the same time. It is one of the important examples of the expression we use in medicine, ”there is no disease, there is a patient”. It is seen in 1 in every 10 women of reproductive age. Chocolate cyst disease is an unusual disease that is sometimes detected only by chance without causing any complaints, while at other times much relief may not be achieved despite many medical treatments and operations being carried out. Chocolate cyst disease is a chronic oestrogen-dependent inflammatory disease. But it can be seen, even if at a lower rate, during the menopause period when the oestrogen level is very low. Endometriosis is the settling of the layer lining the inside of the uterus (the endometrium) on organs outside the uterus. These ectopic foci respond to hormonal fluctuations in the circulation in the same way as the endometrium inside the uterus, with proliferation, secretory activity and menstrual breakdown (menstruation). Chocolate cyst disease can cause conditions such as menstrual cramps, painful sexual intercourse, difficulty in having children, chronic pelvic pain (inside the pelvic bone) that does not pass and does not respond adequately to painkillers, and painful defecation.

Pain that is generally accepted as normal may sometimes not be normal. If you are experiencing severe pain you should definitely see a doctor. Do not listen to anyone. What seems normal to everyone may not be normal for you. I too am an endometriosis patient. I had an operation in July 2018, and how glad I am that I came across @drtanerusta. ✔️ I had a cyst inside my abdomen. I was experiencing pain every month, and life is very short, so why should you spend a few days of every month lying down? For now, thank goodness, I am better, but there is no definitive solution for endometriosis. Become aware of it. Do not neglect it.

I had an operation 2 months ago; I cannot describe what pain I suffered for years, what I went through up to the day of the operation!
